Ever tried to smoke with cheap store bought smoker? Sick of baby sitting for stable cooking temperature? The solution for that is more thermal mass.. So we found a Cheap way to make this luxury smoker out of a salvaged 120L Hot Water Tank and some 5 mm (approx 0.2 inch) hot rolled steel sheet. The cost of these kind’s of smokers if bought new goes up to 2000$. If you have some spare time and handy hands you can make a better one for practically nothing (we savaged all the materials but if you want to buy them it could set you back around 200$). Be careful while using power tools, they are dangerous, be sure to be safe.
How to build an Offset Smoker?
The materials for the smoker are square metal rods, hot water tank, hot rolled steel sheet and 4 wheels. Of course, metal processing tools are necessary, for cutting and welding. If you don’t have a welder you can use metal screws to connect between all the eements.
To make it cheap, check out your area daily, your neighbors may define these materials as trash.
Using galvanized square rods and welding machine, measure the diameter of the tank and build the base by that measurement.
After that cut your hot rolled steel sheet into 4 firebox walls and stick it together.
Now it’s time to make an opening in the tank for the fire exhaust and attach the firebox together.
For the front smoker door, it’s recommended to cut the top line first, weld the hinges and after that cut the whole door.
Seal the back of the firebox with a metal sheet. Measure and cut the door, weld the hinges and lock.
It’s time to burn out the paint. After that, you could rub it easily.
The metal strip would seal the smoke leak around the main door and wooden sweeper stick for the handle.
Looks good! Now it’s time for painting, use high temp paint.
For the smoke exhaust pipe, you can use a gutter pipe or any other metallic pipe that can fit your outlet.
